On 5 February 2017, a remarkable incident brought an abrupt end to a Davis Cup tie between Canada and Great Britain in Ottawa. Denis Shapovalov, then just 17 years old, was playing Kyle Edmund in the decisive 5th set when frustration boiled over. Those who visit 1xBet Kenya site can also wager on the Davis Cup too.
Edmund had taken the first two sets 6-3, 6-4 and had just broken Shapovalov’s serve to lead 2-1 in the third. After losing the point, Shapovalov angrily struck a spare ball away from the court. Instead of clearing the playing area, however, the ball flew directly toward the chair and hit umpire Arnaud Gabas in his left eye. The 1xBet Kenya site is also a place that tennis fans can visit and where great bets can be made.
Serious consequences
The incident was accidental rather than an attempt to hit the official. Nevertheless, the referee, Brian Earley, immediately defaulted Shapovalov for unsportsmanlike conduct. With the Canadian disqualified, Great Britain won the tie 3-2 and advanced to the Davis Cup quarter-finals. When trying betting football at 1xBet you can rest assured that you will not get struck by a ball in your eye.
Gabas required medical attention and was taken to Ottawa General Hospital. Medically speaking, the following things can be said:
- initial examinations found no damage to his cornea or retina;
- although he had significant bruising and swelling;
- further examinations revealed a fracture of the orbital bone beneath his left eye;
- and he subsequently underwent successful surgery in France.
Speaking about France, 1xBet also offers betting options on football competitions from this country too.
Apologies and fines
Shapovalov was visibly distressed by what had happened. He went to the referee’s office to apologise personally and later described himself as ashamed and embarrassed. The International Tennis Federation concluded that he had not intended to strike Gabas, but still fined him US$7,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. And at this moment, you can visit the website 1xbet.co.ke/en/line/tennis – all tennis betting is available on current matches played by Shapovalov too.
The episode became one of the most memorable moments of Shapovalov’s early career. But in addition to that, it is one of the most bizarre scenes in the history of tennis, which is a sport that cares a lot about the quality of the show it displays. If you enjoy tennis, you can go to 1xBet and enjoy all betting options that are offered by this platform.
