Tanzania football team is one team that have never won a match at the Africa Cup of Nations, but hopes rise high as head coach Miguel Gamondi believes their long awaited victory at the continental will start against Nigeria when both teams meet at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco on Tuesday, The Bettingvoice reports.
The Taifa supers Stars have played in three editions of the tournament since —1980, 2019 and 2023— having played nine matches without leading with a goal. Their Group C opener today against the Super Eagles of Nigeria will be their 10th AFCON game as they hope to break the chains of losing .
This will be their second meeting at the Complexe Sportif de Fès after their second meeting after their first encounter at the competition in 1980 on Nigerian soil. The match ended 3-1 in favor of the Super Eagles in the opening match of the tournament.

September 3, 2016, was their most recent meeting during qualification for the 2017 AFCON, the both teams played out a goalless draw in Dar es Salaam before Nigeria called a return fixture ending 1–0 at the chief Godwill stadium Uyo.
Gamondi during his pre-match press conference with Bettingvoice said “It’s our dream, and nobody can stop us from believing and dreaming,” “If you don’t have a dream, it doesn’t make sense to sleep too much. I respect Nigeria a lot, but in football anything is possible. We are here to make a good performance and win .”
The Argentine coach admitted Nigeria’s superior pedigree in the field of play but insisted his team were not resigned to defeat super eagle today.
“I’m very realistic about today’s outcome . Nigeria may have 99 percent control with the field, but you never know,” he said. “I am confident we can use any slide chance we have. If we make use of our chances then we are sure of winning today, and winning today’s match is like winning the AFCON for us, especially at the start of the tournament.”
After today’s opener against Nigeria, Tanzania will play against Uganda in their second Group C match on Friday before concluding their group campaign against Tunisia next Tuesday.

Tanzania played their AFCON debut in 1980 against Nigeria, losing all three group matches in a row, from the 3–1 defeat to the Super Eagles, followed by losses to Egypt and Ivory Coast.
In 2019, they made a comeback into the tournament by former Super Eagles winger Emmanuel Amuneke after a 39-year absence, but they again went without a win, losing to Senegal, Kenya and Algeria.
At the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, the Taifa Stars pulled up signs of victories, but still had a draw against Zambia and DR Congo after an opening defeat to Morocco.
