On 5 February 2017, a remarkable incident brought an abrupt end to a Davis Cup tie between Canada and Great Britain in Ottawa. Denis Shapovalov, then just 17 years old, was playing Kyle Edmund in the decisive 5th set when frustration boiled over. Edmund had taken the first two sets 6-3, 6-4 and had just broken Shapovalov’s serve to lead 2-1 in the third. After losing the point, Shapovalov angrily struck a spare ball away from the court. Instead of clearing the playing area, however, the ball flew directly toward the chair and hit umpire Arnaud Gabas in his left eye. With the Canadian disqualified, Great Britain won the tie 3-2 and advanced to the Davis Cup quarter-finals.
